Dear All,

Well, this will be our last newsletter for 2013…where did it go? Looking back on the year, the charity has achieved so much, from generating awareness to receiving some amazing donations from our loyal supporters. I am delighted to be supported by a great team here and we are all looking ahead to 2014 with great expectations.

I hope you enjoy reading our snippets of information below – there is so much going on here that we have not included all our work. I know I go on about this, but if you haven’t already; please do join us on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter (if you indeed use these platforms).

We constantly update these pages with our news, share the news of the melanoma community and really value engagement. ALL interaction helps us raise awareness of melanoma and it costs nothing! You will find all the links to our social media platforms on

On behalf of the team, I sincerely hope that 2013 was a good year for you and that 2014 will be even better.

‘Outdoor Kids – Sun Safety Code’ Gets a Logo and New Supporters

We’ve been very busy on building our OK Initiative over the last month. The campaign logo and compliance mark were revealed and we have started to use them. We hope you will agree that the whistle and the charity logo combine well to get out outdoor message out there.

“I am pleased to support The Outdoor Kids Initiative. It's very easy to think that the weather in this country isn't hot enough to cause damage- it is - please make sure that you protect your kids when they are outside playing.”
Baroness Grey-Thompson DBE, Paralympic multiple medal winner, parliamentarian and campaigner.

Support from Sport!

The team has been pounding pavements to garner support and this month they were at Wembley Stadium to meet with The FA; who very much approved of the campaign. Other groups including: SportscoachUK, RYA, PGA, ECB, NSPCC, The Scout Association, PCA, and the LTA have all confirmed initial agreement to make sure that the initiative reaches the maximum number of children and young people.

We will be working hard to recruit more associations and to get more sportspeople into our ranks as supporters as the initiative builds momentum. The Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code will be run online via a microsite which is currently being developed and we should be testing the system by early February; in time for the launch around Easter 2014.

Be Clear on Cancer – Malignant Melanoma Pilot Expert Group Teleconference

Department of Health

The charity was invited to participate in a teleconference organised by the Department of Health. The purpose of this was to discuss and review a planned skin cancer awareness campaign ‘Be Clear on Cancer’, representatives included the account team from M&C Saatchi, Julia Verne from the South West Public Health Observatory, and Rona Black – researcher into melanoma from Glasgow; plus other charities similar to ourselves.

The discussion and the obvious challenges to aligning objectives and messages to the campaign led to a lively discussion. We agreed that we would be happy to continue our involvement as the campaign develops, and to view press materials and advertising executions with a view to giving feedback. We will of course, report back on all developments.

Skin Cancer Memorial – Kick off Meeting

The British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) contacted us with regards to their idea of generating a Skin Cancer Memorial campaign. We were invited to a round table steering meeting along with other likeminded charities to discuss potential ideas. It was an interesting meeting which saw lots of opinions aired, especially around the idea of generating a cohesive group of skin cancer and melanoma stakeholders. The overriding opinion was ‘in unity there is strength’ and from this standpoint we look forward to building a positive path forward. For further information from BAD click HERE.

Official Charity of Rose Hill School

We have been chosen as the official charity of Rose Hill School in Tunbridge Wells. This is fantastic as the school are very active fundraisers and are also gearing up to help us spread awareness of the importance of sun protection. We will be attending an assembly next year and we are currently discussing ‘fun’ fundraising ideas with their school council, which will involve parents and children. We will keep you updated!
