Dear All,

I know it’s terribly English to talk about the weather, but we hope you are all safe in this extreme and prolonged wet spell. Many may assume a melanoma charity hibernates in winter, but this is far from the truth! Those of you who have been with us from the start will know how we have been building the charity over the past year and as a result, 2014 will be the year we really put melanoma awareness on the map!

We have been busy organising awareness events and in particular, our brand new initiative, the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, which will launch in May (see more details below). We’ve been meeting with like-minded charities to look at ways we can unite and create wider national awareness around our existing Melanoma Awareness Week. Hopefully, with some great minds on-board and lots of dedication, this will bring us a step closer to that.

Finally, we’ve been keeping up-to-date with all our amazing supporters who, stealth like, have been training, fundraising and raising awareness on our behalf. We appreciate all your hard work and all funds that are being, and have been raised.

Melanoma Taskforce Update Meeting

We will be attending the next meeting of the group which will be held in Westminster on Tuesday 4th March 2014. This will be attended by Sean Duffy, the National Clinical Director for Cancer who will be updating the committee on the current state of melanoma commissioning and cancer policy from within NHS England.

Also on the agenda is the recent research project on melanoma clinical trials and patients’ access to them across the NHS, and reviewing and refreshing the Taskforce’s original publication, 2015 Skin Cancer Visions. We will be discussing the Taskforces new website; developed specifically so that the general public can access reports more easily, found at As always, we will update you via our blog on all points raised.

Ashley Charlwood – The Desert is Calling!

Not only is Ash our training ambassador but also a major fundraiser for the charity. As many may know, Ash will be competing in the Marathon de Sables aka ‘the toughest footrace on earth’ in April, and as such has spent winter training hard to get into tip top fitness (which he’ll need in spades!)

His aim is the raise £10k and thanks to some corporate sponsorship from Chris Charlwood (MD of Simple Intranet), he is one step closer to that total. We thank both the Charlwoods for their commitment dfdf and generosity. Read all about this in the latest blog from Ash here and if you feel like motivating Ashley in this courageous attempt, visit his JustGiving page here.

The Bradburys on All Star Family Fortunes

This month, TV Presenter Julia Bradbury and her family competed against Darts champion Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor and his family for a jackpot of £30,000. Along with Sparks we were delighted to be their nominated charity.

We would like to extend a big thank you to Julia and her entire family for their efforts and for selecting us and coming away with a very healthy £1,000 prize. Our donation of £500 has been gratefully received and will be put to great use.

Recently we have heard back from Dr Yella Martin, Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Foundation who says that they have now completed their patient recruitment for their melanoma study, and have now started in the lab with the analysis. The Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code

We are proud to announce that our new initiative; the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code will launch on the 7th May 2014. This free resource and accreditation initiative has been designed to support coaches, teachers and leaders with the important task of ensuring that all children in their care can enjoy the benefits of physical activity outdoors whilst being protected from the harmful effects of the sun.

It is currently supported by over 10 governing bodies of sport and outdoor activity organisations and we are getting more on board every week. Our microsite is currently under construction and when live we will forward you all the details.

Amazing Support from Lincolnshire

Jonathan (Jonno) Harrington died on December 16th 2013 from melanoma. Further to this, his parents Gloria and John and works colleague Emma Brookes set up a JustGiving page in his memory, which so far has raised £1,850.00 plus £292.50 in Gift Aid. We are sure you will agree that this is a wonderful tribute to Jonathan and shows the impact he had on those with whom he worked at the Hanson Cement Office in Ketton. Continuing this wonderful work, Emma is also using our bracelets and leaflets and is organising melanoma fundraising charity days at work. To find out more visit here. Thank you.
