Our Team
We have a team of dedicated trustees and advisors who utilise their experience and strengths to ensure the charity fulfils its objectives, is fully compliant, focused, and impactful.

Michelle Baker
Chief Executive Officer
Michelle met Harry Townsend (founder of the Melanoma Fund) at a local fundraiser in 2013, where he convinced her that working for a charity would be a good idea. Of course, Harry was right, and after a few months, she jumped on board, bringing with her over 30 years’ experience in PR and marketing. She set to work building a new website, logo, branding, and a future strategy for national campaigning.
In 2014 Michelle created the Outdoor Kids Sun Safety Code, inspired by a sunburn received by her son whilst playing tennis. In 2016 she launched the Watch Your Back! campaign, and in 2019, the Slip! Slap! Swing! sun protection campaign for golf.
Most recently Michelle created Sunguarding Sport and Sunguarding Outdoors to create more awareness of the importance of sun protection in sport and outdoor recreation.
Michelle is responsible for the day to day running of the Melanoma Fund, building, and expanding the charity’s four prevention campaigns, organising and attending all the charity’s events, and keeping the trustees in order!
Her passion and drive have helped the charity thrive, developing multiple partnerships, key supporters, and strong links within the community; the type of impact more fitting a larger organisation.
Simon Quarendon
Trustee
Simon has had a lengthy business career in marketing where he has worked for several agencies. He now acts as a board advisor to SMEs helping them with their growth and exit strategies.
Simon met the charity’s founder, Harry Townsend, when he joined Felbridge Juniors RFC aged 13 and remained an active member of the club through to its demise. Simon replaced Harry as Chair of the charity in 2019, and continues in that role today, working closely with the CEO to ensure compliancy and diligence.
Married with four sons, Simon lives in Twickenham and maintains an avid interest in rugby. He also acts as a volunteer for the charity, School Readers, where he listens to local primary school children read.

Mark Dunham Habgood
Advisor
Mark is a management and advertising consultant, with over 30 years of hands-on experience, having owned companies in both New Zealand and Australia. He is a life coach, a business mentor and works with a number of New Zealand based charities. He has been involved with the Townsend family since 1971, and organised Harry Townsend’s legendary 800 km walk, pushing a wheelbarrow from Wellington (NZ) to Cape Reinga.
This effort helped raise awareness and funds for melanoma prevention and at the same time founded Melanoma NZ. After leaving the NZ charity in 2014, both himself and Harry received an honorary trustee awards in recognition of their massive input.
Mark, who has lived in NZ since 1975, now travels extensively spending six months of each year in Europe where he keeps close tabs on the Melanoma Fund, attends the charity’s monthly meetings virtually or in person, and provides support and advice. Mark utilises his vast relevant experience and skills, to ensure the charity achieves its objectives, maximises opportunities and remains compliant.
Samuel Orkar
Advisor
Mr Samuel Orkar is a skin cancer expert, consultant plastic surgeon and member of the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Unit team at Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead.
Sam is on the GMC specialist register for plastic surgery and is a full member of The British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons, BAPRAS and the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, BAAPS.

Charlie Whelpton
Trustee
Charlie is a self-confessed ‘businessman’ currently at the helm of several high-profile companies. He has worked in journalism, PR and marketing with a particular interest in technology.
He served as a co-director of a London based consultancy which was later sold to a major UK advertising agency. He holds a BSc and a MPhil in psychology, the latter from Sussex University.
Charlie has been linked with the Townsend family since his early days of playing rugby at Felbridge Juniors, and brings his extensive commercial acumen to the charity in his role as a trustee and treasurer as well as advisor on marketing and business matters.
Cheryl Muggeridge
Trustee
Cheryl admits she didn’t know what melanoma was until her mum was diagnosed, and passed away in 2012, at the age of 63, believed to be a result of a bad sunburn at 17. Before this, Cheryl thought that sun cream was ‘just to stop you getting burnt and peeling’, and had no idea that the UV light could cause skin cancer.
Cheryl met Harry Townsend after seeing a leaflet about melanoma in her local chemist, wanting as much information as she could get following her mother’s diagnosis. It turned out that they knew the same people through his home town of East Grinstead, his many rugby contacts, and Mark Habgood, who helped Harry with his wheelbarrow adventure across N.Z.
Having since had friends diagnosed with melanoma, makes Cheryl all the more determined to ensure that the lack of knowledge she experienced, which is unfortunately not uncommon, is quashed, and is keen to work with the charity to achieve this personal mission.

Professor Brian Diffey

His recent book Sun Protection: a risk management approach received positive reviews including, “Really fantastic comprehensive book about sun from one of the pioneers in the field“ (www.labmuffin.com)”
He invented both the UVA Star Rating for sunscreens in conjunction with Boots in the UK, and the Critical Wavelength adopted by the Food & Drug Administration in the USA as the sole measure of broad-spectrum protection.
Always keen to provide his expert advice, Brian works with the charity to ensure that all published facts and advice is accurate and up to date, writing blogs and media articles to help spread the word on sun protection and the charity’s work.

Dr Clive Dewing qualified from St George’s Hospital London in 1979 and has dedicated over 30 years of his career to practicing as a GP in SW Kent, with a special focus on minor skin surgery.
An active outdoor enthusiast, he is deeply committed to the fact that prevention is better than cure, aligning closely with the mission of our charity.

With 15 years of experience as an educator of health professionals, he has actively promoted the importance of skin care among his peers.
He is trained to recognise melanoma in its many guises as well as understanding its pathogenesis.
As an advisor, Clive serves as a spokesperson for the charity and provides expert skin checks, engaging talks, and keynote speeches. He is dedicated to raising awareness about the hereditary nature of melanoma and advocates routine skin checks, particularly for individuals who spend considerable time outdoors.
Clive maintains that, while education is vital, regular surveillance is also vital for effective skin cancer prevention.
Dr Tony Buckland
Medical Ambassador
Dr Buckland qualified at St Thomas’ Hospital in 1976 and has since practiced as a GP with an interest in minor skin surgery, in Royal Tunbridge Wells. As a keen golfer, he understands the importance of sun protection on the fairway, and how raising awareness of skin cancer is more vital than ever.
Tony is kept busy excising basal cell carcinomas (low grade skin malignancies which erode the skin locally) and some squamous cell carcinomas (more serious as can spread to other parts of the body). I also diagnose a few melanomas each year (much more serious as they can spread, and if left too late can be fatal) however, these are dealt with by specialist centre.
Tony supports the charity in multiple ways, including serving as a media spokesperson, offering expert advice, and attending various events and functions. At these events, he speaks about skin cancer and sun protection, as well as conducts skin checks. Over the years, Tony has diagnosed numerous cases of cancer at these gatherings.
With a personable approach, extensive experience in golf, and years as a GP, Tony connects with golfers of all ages. He understands their unique concerns and offers tailored solutions that effectively communicate our skin cancer prevention messages, in a way that resonates deeply with them.

David Owen
Trustee
David is a passionate sport teacher and rugby coach, and all-around sportsman, dedicated to inspiring others to get involved in sport. Formerly at Clevedon School, David has over 40 years of experience in both playing and teaching and brings a wealth of expertise to his coaching, and now, to the charity.
We met David in 2020, when he launched a unique fundraiser in memory of his sister Dawn, who sadly passed away in 2008 after a short battle with melanoma. During lockdown, David combined his humour and community spirit by pledging to do 25 press-ups a day for 25 days, encouraging his former pupils to donate. His efforts sparked a social media frenzy, and the campaign ended up raising over £15,000 for the charity. (See more HERE).
After relocating from Somerset to Leeds to be with his daughters, David continued to stay involved with the charity and recognised a new opportunity to further our mission through his work with disadvantaged young people in sports.
As a Trustee and Sunguard ambassador, David brings his extensive experience, personal connection and hands on approach to help us raise awareness. He will focus on promoting sun safety to PE teachers, coaches, and young athletes, ensuring the next generation is informed and protected from the dangers of skin cancer as a fitting legacy to Dawn.
Mr Wayne Jaffe
Medical Ambassador
Mr Jaffe brings a wealth of expertise to the Melanoma Fund in both the prevention and treatment of skin cancer. As a Senior Consultant and Plastic and Reconstructive surgeon at the University Hospital of North Midlands, he specialises in the surgical management of both local and advanced skin cancer. He has published scholarly articles on skin cancer as well as podcast and radio interviews on the subject. Until recently he led the Specialist Skin Cancer Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) and served as the Chair of the Skin Cancer Expert Advisory Group for the West Midlands.
A keen sportsman, Mr Jaffe’s personal passion for endurance challenges makes him acutely aware of the risks of UV exposure faced by athletes and outdoor enthusiasts. He has completed numerous marathons and Ironman triathlons, often using these pursuits to raise funds for medical causes close to his heart, reflecting his dedication to both health and sport.
His deep understanding of melanoma and other forms of skin cancer, combined with firsthand appreciation of the athletic community, makes him uniquely equipped to support the drive our mission, campaigns and initiatives forward and promote sun safety awareness across the UK and beyond.

Rob Cafferky
Trustee
Rob is an enthusiastic advocate for sun safety in sport, primarily involved in football and within his local and regional communities. With a personal journey shaped by his experience with melanoma, Rob brings a unique and powerful perspective to the Sunguard team.
Reflecting on his childhood, Rob recalls an entire youth spent within the amateur football environment including summer tournaments and trips abroad where sun safety education was in the main, absent. He recognises the importance of having a relatable and respected voice in the conversation around sun protection. Through his experiences, he aims to fill this gap and ensure that young athletes and their families understand the essentials of sun safety.
Leveraging his extensive network of football contacts, Rob is dedicated to reaching a wide audience of FA regional bodies, coaches, parents, and young athletes. He believes that by creating awareness and education within these groups, using the Melanoma Fund’s resources, he can help create meaningful change and promote healthy sun habits for future generations.
Guy Jarvis
Trustee
As the executive officer at Mountain Training England, Guy is responsible for strategic developments, projects, and fostering connections with the board and key stakeholders across the UK. An avid outdoorsman, he can often be found sea-cliff climbing, boating, and embracing alpine summers and high-altitude mountains. Like many, Guy once viewed sun protection to prevent sunburn rather than as a critical measure against skin cancer.
However, a recent stage 3 melanoma diagnosis changed his perspective. It began with a swollen lymph node, which led to the discovery of a suspicious mole on the top of his head. Although the mole was quickly excised, the cancer had already spread to his lymphatic system, requiring a neck dissection to remove all affected nodes.
As a Trustee – and a Sunguard ambassador – Guy is dedicated to raising awareness about sun protection within the mountaineering community. He is committed to ensuring that outdoor enthusiasts understand the importance of regular skin checks and protective measures.
“With Mountain Training England already supporting the Melanoma Fund, my mission is to embed sun safety into the culture of mountaineering, helping to support policy change and protect others from the risks of skin cancer.”

Siva Kumar
Medical Ambassador
Mr Siva Kumar Veeramani is a UK-trained consultant plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon appointed at Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead and working in their Melanoma & Skin Cancer Unit.
Siva supports the Melanoma Fund by providing his expert advice and knowledge to their prevention campaigns, acts as a media spokesperson on medical issues and provides his time, when not busy, at the charity’s skin check clinics.
Dr Hugo De La Peña
Medical Ambassador
Dr Hugo De La Peña, MD, PHD, FRCP is a renowned Oncologist with a PhD in Cancer Genetics and Tumour Immunology from University College London and has held postdoctoral research and clinical training roles across the UK’s top “Golden Triangle” institutions (UCL, Cambridge and Oxford Universities). He has pioneered significant cancer vaccine and immunotherapy work, led clinical trials, and was awarded the European Young Scientist Award—an impressive double-time recipient.
Alongside his work with Maggie’s and Cancer Research UK, Hugo joins the Melanoma Fund as our Medical Ambassador, where he will provide trusted clinical insight, represent the charity publicly, and support the delivery of strategic projects such as ‘Sunguarding Schools’.
“I am passionate about supporting the Melanoma Fund’s mission to ensure children are educated in the right way, and adults understand their responsibility in this. Only then can we start to grow skin cancer out of the next generation. I love killing cancer, but a cancer prevented will always be better than a cancer cured”
Off duty, Hugo is a dedicated father whose family experience informs his compassionate and community-driven approach to cancer care.
