Nick Pugh is one of the most easily recognisable golf caddies on tour. With a career in professional  golf spanning several decades, he is currently ‘on the bag’ for Lucas Herbert, one of Australia’s top players. They have had success on multiple tours winning tournaments around the globe together.

Having been diagnosed with several BCC’s (Basal Cell Carcinomas) and receiving treatment to remove these in early 2010, he started having more regular skin checks.  In 2023 whilst shaving, he discovered a lesion on his head, which he believed to be another BCC.  On closer inspection he realised the lesion was situated on a freckle, which had changed colour from a light to dark brown. After a full skin check, it was diagnosed as a stage 2c melanoma, which the doctor insisted should be removed immediately.

Following prompt surgery, including a skin graft, Nick is now undergoing 12 months of immunotherapy treatment. He has a powerful message regarding protection against UV rays for anyone who spends regular amounts of time exposed to or in direct sunlight, specifically golfers and caddies.

Nick said, “When focused on a sport you love, it is very easy to become complacent around sun protection and the risk of skin cancer, thinking it cannot happen to you. I am living proof that it can. If you haven’t heard about melanoma’ – which I hadn’t – I strongly suggest you find out about it.  It turns out that simply wearing a cap is not enough to stop UV rays causing damage or even cancer to our heads (and necks). You need to be vigilant and never underestimate the power of the sun, wherever you are in the world.”
