Guy Jarvis
As the executive officer at Mountain Training England, Guy is responsible for strategic developments, projects, and creating connections with the board and key stakeholders across the UK. Guy is an avid outdoorsman, often found sea-cliff climbing, boating, and embracing alpine summers and high-altitude mountains. Despite his affinity for the outdoors, Guy, like many, once overlooked the necessity of sun protection, only employing it to avoid sunburn, without considering the threat of skin cancer.
However, a recent stage 3 melanoma diagnosis shifted his perspective. It began with a swollen lymph node, eventually leading to the discovery of a suspicious mole on top of his head. Prompt action saw the mole excised, but unfortunately, the cancer had already reached his lymphatic system, necessitating a neck dissection to remove all affected nodes.
Reflecting on his journey, Guy acknowledges the lingering uncertainty that accompanies any battle with cancer. Grateful for the swift intervention of the NHS, he is now keen to channel his experience into advocacy, determined to spare others from a similar diagnosis he says;
“In my capacity as a Sunguard, I am committed to championing sun protection not only within MTE, but also throughout the mountaineering community. With our organisation already a supporter of the Melanoma Fund, my mission is to ensure that sun protection and regular skin checks become ingrained habits, safeguarding the well-being of outdoor enthusiasts everywhere.”
